Plantation sector is an important segment of the Indian economy. India is home to many high value plantation crops and is one of the major contributors to the total world production.
The sector has great significance due to its high employment potential and provides opportunities for income generation to a large section of the society especially to women. In addition, the plantation industry offers lot of potential for earning foreign exchange through export of produce from plantations.
Globalisation and increased competition have further brought in new challenges as well as opportunities to this sector. Plantation companies both new and old, need to improve their competitive edge by employing managerial skills and applying the latest technological innovations to improve productivity and be globally competitive. The sector if managed well has scope for high income generation all the year round.
Thus, it calls for capacity building in Plantation Industry, especially at the supervisory/ managerial level for improving productivity and overall performance of this sector. The PG Diploma programme in Plantation management seeks to develop competent human resource for the plantation industry.
The Programme provides exposure to various management practices that are relevant for professional management of the sector. It also provides the technical know-how required for effectively managing major plantations such as tea, coffee, rubber, spices etc.
Objectives
The main objective of the Programme is to:
- Create understanding of the salient features of the agriculture policy framework among policy makers, implementers and other stakeholders of the system for its effective implementation.
- Develop human resource for:
- Identification of strategic issues with reference to national policies in agriculture;
- Analysis of policy aspects and its operationalisation; and
- Development of an implementation framework for agriculture and rural development policies

Student Support Activities
Learning M aterial: The printed study material is sent to the registered students at home by
post.
Audio-visual learning aids: The learning package also contains audio and video cassettes
and CDs which have been produced by the University. A video programme is usually of
25-30 minutes duration. These programmes can be heard/viewed at the study centre during specific sessions, or purchased for use at home.
Counselling: Counselling sessions are held according to a schedule drawn up by the study centre coordinator, usually during weekends.
TV counselling and Tele-conferencing: Through Gyan Darshan Channels and EduSat. One Gyan Darshan channel is available on DTH platform.
Radio Counselling: Through phone-in programmes on AIR and Gyan Vani.
